Bumpy shares new single 'Leave It All Behind"

Listen to ‘Leave It All Behind’ here

Naarm/Melbourne-based soul artist and proud Noongar woman Bumpy today shares her latest single, the hypnotic ‘Leave It All Behind’, out now on Astral People Recordings / [PIAS].

Opening with the whisper of lapping waves, ‘Leave It All Behind’ unhurriedly unspools itself, its steady, sultry backbeat joined by Bumpy’s commandingly silky vocals, flares of electric guitars and gentle, pillowy keys as the track spirals deeper into its mesmeric sense of contentment. A spacious and generous reminder to take a moment and to breathe, the warmhearted ‘Leave It All Behind’ seemingly suspends time as it holds you in its tranquil spell, swelling towards a magnetic coda.

‘Leave It All Behind’ is a dreamlike bubble that was written about the pull of the water, country and moving away from the city, Bumpy shares. Inspired by a camping trip on GunaiKurnai country after many lockdowns in Naarm, it romanticises the longing for simplicity and stillness. It has become a good reminder to step out of the pace of the city, slow down and hit pause every now and then.

The single, which received its first radio play on triple j’s Good Nights last night, follows Bumpy’s debut single for Astral People Recordings, ‘Return Home’, a transportive, string-driven ode to home and “the people, places and connections that make us feel grounded and at ease”. Racking up playlist additions across Double J, rage, MTV AU, 2SER, SYN FM, PBS and more, ‘Return Home’ garnered praise from triple j Unearthed (where Bumpy is highlighted as this week’s Feature Artist), Pilerats and AUDollars for its “impeccable and authentic display of self” (WAEVEZ AU). Additionally, ‘Return Home’ also received extensive playlisting across DSPs, including inclusion on Spotify’s New Music Friday AU&NZ, R&B Feels, Broad Chords, Blak Australia, Apple Music’s New Music Daily, Alt Pop, Mellow Days and first position on TikTok ANZ’s First Nations playlist, to name a few.

The lead vocalist of Naarm/Melbourne neo-soul outfit Squid Nebula, Bumpy emerged as a solo artist in late 2020 with her debut single ‘Falling’. That single promptly drew national and international support, including praise from Frankie Magazine, Trouble Juice and Beat, airplay from 3RRR, 4ZZZ, PBS FM, Koori Radio, triple j Unearthed and more, also garnering her a nomination for Music Victoria’s Archie Roach Award for Emerging Talent and seeing Bumpy featured in ABC’s NAIDOC Special alongside Emma Donovan and The Putbacks, Uncle Kutcha Edwards and Kee’ahn.

Having previously supported Hiatus Kaiyote and played festivals such as Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Strawberry Fields, Grampians Music Festival, Melbourne Music Week (where she curated a First Nations showcase, Wominjeka) and more, Bumpy most recently appeared as part of VIVID Festival at Astral People’s Birthday at the Sydney Opera House forecourt, alongside Yussef Dayes, Mildlife, Jitwam and others.
