Nourished By Time is the musical project of Baltimore-born artist Marcus Brown. His emotionally charged blend of post-punk, New Wave, R&B, electro-funk, and experimental indie pop reflects a deeply personal and sharply observational voice, as captured on his breakout releases Erotic Probiotic 2 (2023) and Catching Chickens (2024). A Metamodernist, Brown crafts music that is as soulful as it is subversive—tackling themes of love, labor, existentialism, dreams, disillusionment, and hope.
This summer, Nourished By Time will release his first full-length album on XL Recordings, titled The Passionate Ones. Crafted across Baltimore, London, and New York City, The Passionate Ones is a twelve-track catharsis, a sermon howled from the underbelly of late-stage capitalism, written, produced, mixed, and sung entirely by Brown.
Initially created in Los Angeles’ Koreatown in late 2019, Nourished By Time emerged as Brown’s escape from the monotony of his day jobs. He channeled these experiences into songwriting, developing the dreamlike, uncanny sound that would come to define the project. His first release, Erotic Probiotic, was a two-song EP on London indie label Scenic Route, quickly followed by the critically acclaimed debut album Erotic Probiotic 2. Picking up Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Music’ designation upon release, it went on to feature on ‘Best of 2024’ lists from Gorilla vs Bear (#1), Pitchfork (#5), The Guardian, The FADER, Paste, and more.
In the same year, Brown collaborated with Yaeji on “Happy” from her debut album With A Hammer, remixed Dry Cleaning’s “Gary Ashby,” and supported them on a 20-stop North American tour.
2024 proved transformative for Nourished By Time. After signing with XL Recordings, he released Catching Chickens, a five-track EP inspired by the iconic scene in Rocky where his trainer makes him chase a flock of chickens as a test of agility. The record earned Brown the cover of CRACK Magazine, who declared “Hell of a Ride” their Track of 2024, and featured in ‘Best of 2024’ lists from NPR, Pitchfork, The FACE Magazine, Resident Advisor, CLASH, Mixmag, Gorilla vs Bear, and UPROXX. “Hell of a Ride” also appeared in Spotify’s Best Songs of 2024, with Brown delivering a memorable live performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #LateShowMeMusic series.
That year also marked his first major headline tours. Nourished By Time performed 13 stops across North America and a UK headline tour, selling out venues including Bowery Ballroom (New York), Echoplex (Los Angeles), and ICA (London). He expanded his collaborative work with artists such as Kacy Hill and Metronomy, solidifying his reputation as one of contemporary music’s most intriguing voices.
