Ross From Friends joins us in Australia this summer, sharing his eminently danceable and emotive new record Tread, alongside bandmates Jed Hampson & John Dunk. A beat head through and through, the music of Ross From Friends, aka Felix Weatherall, is ever-so-slightly left of center. Without operating too strongly out of the realm of straight up-and-down dance music, it captures his unique sensibility and perspective, culminating into extremely forward-thinking electronic music.

A longstanding member of Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder, this comes as no surprise. A label that consistently offers the most cutting-edge electronic music would only be fit for the salient experience that is 2021’s Tread. Tread maintains Ross From Friends’ signature idiosyncratic style, while investing further into sentimentality. Nostalgic but modern, Tread is a masterclass in production and emotive dance music. Recorded amidst a vastly changing world, the record required a change in technique, seeing Felix develop an Ableton plugin that crucially opened the creative flood gates. Quietly recording almost every moment spent in session, “Thresho” became vital inspiration for Tread, an artificial studio partner that left Felix safe with the knowledge nothing is lost – a clear theme on the record.  

A solo artist in production, Ross is joined by friends when it comes to the live experience. Jed Hampson & John Dunk join Felix on their plethora of live electronic instruments, alongside acoustic elements like saxophone and guitar, creating a virtuosic experience unlike most performances in the dance music realm. Gracing stages at Coachella, Glastonbury, Primavera, the trio are rehearsed, and ready to bring the emotional and potent experience of Tread to us this summer.
